The Richard E. Winter Cancer Center provides regional access to state-of-the-art cancer treatment. Since 1994, the center has offered medical and radiation oncology services conveniently housed under one roof. In 2004, the Winter Cancer Center completed a multi-million dollar expansion to meet the growing needs of people in St. Lawrence County. The medical and radiation oncology departments are physically connected to the main hospital. This proximity provides convenient access to laboratory and radiology services, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET).
The Winter Cancer Center is the only cancer program in the region recognized by both the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (CoC) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) as offering the very best in cancer care. The center was recognized for providing quality, comprehensive cancer care with a team approach. The Winter Cancer Center has received a three-year accreditation by the CoC with commendations recognizing it as a center of excellence. One in four hospitals in the U.S. are accreditedby the CoC. This quarter comprises a network of programs that provides care to 80 percent of newly diagnosed patients.
Patients are treated in an infusion area with 11 stations in a comforting environment overlooking a meditation garden. Chemotherapy, biotherapy and the newest classifications of anti-cancer drugs are administered while patients relax with their choice of music, television or socialization. A quiet room is available for those patients who desire privacy.
The center's state-of-the-art linear accelerator provides a precise and effective way of delivering radiation therapy. Using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), higher doses of radiation can be delivered directly to tumors and cancer cells while surrounding organs and tissues are protected. The Winter Cancer Treatment Center is the only radiation oncology site between Syracuse and Burlington to offer IMRT SmartBeam Technology and chemotherapy under one roof.
The physicians at the Winter Cancer Center maintain close ties with major comprehensive cancer centers in Buffalo, Burlington and Syracuse. Our radiation oncologist and medical physicist work closely, using a state-of-the-art system to design treatment plans individualized to each patient. This ensures that the correct amount of radiation will be delivered to the prescribed area by our team of expert radiation therapists.
At the Winter Cancer Center, our staff takes a team approach to patient care. Along with our physicians, our certified oncology nurses provide physical, emotional and educational support to patients and their families. They administer chemotherapy and biotherapy and also assess patients who are receiving radiation therapy.
