Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Paul Jarvis Earns Recognition for Outstanding Patient Care

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and NxStage Medical, Inc. are proud to announce Paul Jarvis, RN, as the NxStage Nurse Hero for the Eastern United States. He was also the runner-up for the national Nurse Hero Award. Paul was nominated by his patients, care partners, and colleagues from Claxton-Hepburn’s Ravinder N. Agarwal Renal Center. The Nurse Hero award was designed to recognize the critical role home hemodialysis nurses play in helping patients to receive access to this life-changing dialysis therapy.

Mr. Jarvis was recognized at a ceremony at the Ravinder N. Agarwal Renal Center on January 4, surrounded by family, patients, and coworkers. He was presented a plaque from NxStage staff Jackie Gilmer, clinical consultant, and Stephen Morgan, senior area manager as well as Claxton-Hepburn President and CEO, Nate Howell, and senior management from Claxton-Hepburn.

Some notable comments from his patients that won Mr. Jarvis the Nurse Hero award include, “He is an exceptional trainer who goes above and beyond for his patients.” “He is always a phone call away, day or night to help patients with troubleshooting or health-related concerns.” “He wants his patients to be successful at home.” “His patient is his second family, and he treats every single one of them with compassion.” Additional comments from his co-workers include, “Paul is a very knowledgeable nurse keeping up on all that is necessary for best practices for our home hemo program.” “Paul is a dedicated and great teacher.” “He has taken our home dialysis program and made it his own.” “Paul goes out of his way for the patients and families.” “He is a great teacher and mentor and deserves this award more than any nurse I have ever met.” When asked for a comment, Mr. Jarvis stated, “I am humbled and pleased to think that staff and patients think so highly of me.” He continued, “I truly feel that this award is a team effort.”

Morgan from NxStage noted in his speech that the Ravinder N. Agarwal Renal Center has been setting national trends for a long time. He stated, “They are the first in the Country to offer transitional renal care and are doing a fantastic job of it.”

Mr. Jarvis has worked at the Ravinder N. Agarwal Renal Center for over 20 years and has been working with home hemodialysis patients for the last three years. Presently, the Center has 21 patients on home hemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, which is 2 ½ times greater than the national average of other renal centers.
