On March 27, 2018, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program is joined with the American Diabetes Association for a one-day wake-up call, #DiabetesAlertDay! Starting on April 18, 2018, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., and continuing on April 25, and May 2, the Diabetes Education Program will be holding Diabetes Management group classes. The classes will be held in conference room C, located on the first floor of the Medical Center. A physician referral is required. For more information, or to register, call 315-713-5181, or 315-713-5116.

The classed will include information on meal planning, medications, exercise, complications, and how to make lifestyle modifications. Class speakers include Karen Cole, certified diabetes educator, Alison Felt, registered dietitian, Gerry Hourihan, exercise specialist, Danny Sekhon, pharmacist, and Dr. Michael Seidman.

Self-management education is a critical step in achieving lifestyle modifications to achieve healthy outcomes. It focuses on self-care behaviors, such as healthy eating, developing an activity regime, regular blood sugar monitoring, and preventive practices such as yearly eye exams, and foot care. It is a collaborative process in which the person works with the diabetes educator to set goals and develop the problem-solving and coping skills needed to reach their goals successfully.

Diabetes can lead to severe complications such as blindness, kidney damage, cardiovascular disease, and lower-limb amputations. The occurrence of diabetes-related complications can be reduced with control of blood pressure, glucose levels, management of blood lipids, and regular follow-up with your provider.
