Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Touts its Economic Impact to Community

The Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS) recently released economic and community impact analysis for New York state hospitals to illustrate the tremendous impact hospitals and health systems have on local economies. The reports include statewide and regional analyses for each Senate, Assembly, and Congressional district, and highlight the economic and jobs activity hospitals like Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center provide and spur throughout our service area as well as, essential health services offered, community investment activity, and our ongoing commitment to provide high-quality care.
According to HANYS, hospitals and health systems across New York State play a vital role in improving local economies and communities, by providing critical healthcare and emergency services, contributing vital resources to the communities through jobs, tax revenue, and capital improvements, and are among the largest employers across the state.
In 2017, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center generated $128,000,000 economic activity through jobs and the purchasing of goods and services, and together with all hospitals in Northeastern New York, generated $8.05 billion which makes up about 10.5% of the state’s entire Gross Domestic Product. Claxton-Hepburn invested in its people by spending $50,000,000 in payroll expenditures for direct salary and benefits to our employees and generated 1,000 jobs.
The Medical Center generated $15,000,000 tax dollars that stimulated the local and state economies. Another $15,000,000 was invested into community benefits that are in line with our charitable mission of covering the cost of care provided for people in need, subsidize care and services to low-income, elderly, and under-served communities; and continuously investing in many community health initiatives.
Claxton-Hepburn receives about 30% reimbursement from Medicaid and Medicare which do not cover the cost of care. Medicare or Medicaid comprise about 79% of our inpatient discharges and 61% of our outpatient visits. This underpayment is driven by large volumes of inpatient and outpatient services provided to individuals covered by these public insurance programs.
In 2017, Claxton-Hepburn provided quality health care to 155,000 outpatients. 16,164 people were treated in our emergency department, 3,212 were discharged from our hospital, and 157 babies were delivered.
