Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Richard E. Winter Cancer Center Offering Monthly Cancer Support Group

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s Richard E. Winter Cancer Center is offering a Cancer Support Group. The Support Group is facilitated by Jessica Morley, LMSW, social worker, at the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 2-3:00 p.m. at the Winter Cancer Center. For questions call the Winter Cancer Center at 315-393-2314.

According to the American Cancer Society, people who take part in support groups believe that they can live healthier, happier lives if they spend time relating to others. They say that when they have emotional support, it is easier to deal with their health and social problems. Some claim that the bonds formed between member of support groups can reduce stress, fear, and anxiety and help to promote healing. Evidence suggests that support groups can improve quality of life for people with cancer.

Richard E. Winter Cancer Center Director, Kay Zimmer stated, “Support groups may include education, discussions, exploration and expression of feelings and stress reductions techniques. Topics addressed in support groups are those of concern to the members and those that the group facilitator thinks are important.” Zimmer concluded, “This is one of the many programs we offer as part of our expanded services.”
