Proactive Cancer Care Services in St. Lawrence County

When it comes to cancer, we know that early detection is key. That's why the team at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center works so hard to deliver free or low-cost cancer screenings. With these tools, we can find cancers sooner, when they're easier to treat.

We offer cancer screening tests for:

• Breast cancer
  • We offer complimentary breast cancer screenings, including a clinical breast exam conducted by one of our healthcare providers and a 3D mammogram. Eligible women can access these screenings through our partnership with the St. Lawrence Cancer Services Program.
• Colorectal cancer
  • Complimentary colorectal cancer screenings are available for uninsured individuals who meet the screening criteria. These screenings are made possible through the generous support of the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund and the dedication of our physician, Dr. Christopher Brandy, MD.
• Lung cancer
  • Uninsured individuals who meet the screening criteria can receive free lung cancer screenings, while all others can access $99 lung cancer screenings. These screenings are made available through a generous grant from the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund, Dr. Francis Yew-Wei Lee, MD, FAASM, FCCP, board-certified pulmonlogist, and the expertise of our radiologist, Dr.Ali Gharagozloo, MD. • Skin cancer
  • We conduct free, countywide skin cancer screenings annually at our seven area health centers. There are no specific eligibility requirements for this screening; it is available to all.

Do I Need a Cancer Screening?

The decision regarding when to undergo a cancer screening is a crucial conversation to have with your healthcare provider. Your need for cancer screening depends on several factors, including your age, medical history, and your family's medical history. Patients with higher cancer risk factors may require more frequent screenings than others.

Additionally, if you experience any symptoms that raise concerns, you can request a referral for a cancer screening from your doctor. While the early warning signs of cancer vary depending on the type, there are specific physical symptoms that can be identified for breast and skin cancer. It is advisable to perform self-skin and breast exams at least once a month. During this self-examination, carefully check for any new growths, moles, or discolorations on your body. If you notice anything unusual, don't hesitate to contact your primary care physician for further evaluation and guidance.
